Frequently Asked Questions:
How am I billed?

How do you know how much water I have used?
We have meter readers who go around to all of our customer's homes and read your meter. You are billed in 1,000 gallon increments. The number under the "Reading Per 1,000 gallons" (this will be on the NEW bills starting in June, 1999) is the thousands of gallons you have used. For example, if your previous reading is 10 and your current reading is 20, you have a usage of 10,000 gallons.

How much does it cost to connect to "city" water?
If the water line runs in front of your house, the connection fee is $2,015.00. If an extension is needed, that costs an additional $15.00 per foot of pipe. Please call the office for more information.

What happens if I don't pay my bill?
We will send you a "Delinquent Notice" which will remind you that you haven't paid your bill. If you do not pay the delinquent amount, you will be sent a "Turn Off Notice". You will NEVER be turned off without prior notification. (We cannot control the postal system, however) If you receive a Delinquent Notice or Turn Off Notice, please call the office to make arrangements for paying your bill. If you don't call, and we have to come out to your house, there will be a $20.00 charge even if we don't turn off your water.

What should I do if I believe my bill is too high?
If you think your bill is abnormally high, please call the office as soon as possible after receiving your bill. We will send a meter reader out to your house to re-read your meter, and check for the possibility of a leak.

Does that "little drip" really waste a lot of water?
Well, if it is a slow, steady drip (100 drops per minute) you will waste about 300 gallons a month. Fast drip? About 600 gallons. Small stream? 2000 - 2700 gallons. Large stream? OVER 4600!!

What year-round activity in my home uses the most water?
Toilet flushing! Most toilets use from 4 to 6 gallons of water for each flush. On the average, a dishwasher uses about 50% LESS water than the amount used when you wash and rinse dishes by hand if the dishes are not prerinsed and if only full loads are washed in the dishwasher.

Some people say I should put a brick in my toilet tank to save water. How does that save water and is it a good idea?
Toilet flushing uses a lot of water, and putting something in the toilet tank that takes up space means that less water will be used each time the tank refills after a flush, but putting a brick in your toilet is NOT a good idea. A brick tends to crumble and might damage the toilet's flushing mechanism. Instead, use a glass jar, a plastic bag, or a jug filled with water. Be sure to test the toilet to make sure it works correctly with less water.

Which uses more water...a tub bath or a shower?
That depends. How big is your tub? How long do you take a shower? How fast does the water come out of your showerhead? Answer this question yourself - close the drain in the tub and take a shower. See if you get a tub full of water. Oh..it is a good idea NOT to try this in a shower stall!

When should I water my lawn?
You should water your lawn for long periods of time a couple of times each week, rather than every day. This allows deep penetration of the water. An inch a week is a good rule of thumb, but this varies for different parts of the country. Check with your local garden store. If you want to find out exactly how much you are watering your lawn, and how long you should water, put some large jars of cans around your yard, and see how long you have to run your sprinkler to fill the jar with the right amount of water.
